Schmid Oberrautner – Historic Estate in Gries

Located in the historic district of Gries, just minutes from the centre of Bolzano, our family-owned winery has been cultivated continuously for over 600 years. At Schmid Oberrautner, we represent one of the oldest wine estates in South Tyrol — a place where authenticity, heritage and craftsmanship define the experience.

Behind protected medieval walls and within our 14th-century Gothic cellar, we produce wines deeply rooted in the terroir of Bolzano. A winery visit in Gries is not a staged event, but an immersion into living tradition.

At the heart of our portfolio stands Lagrein from Gries, the district’s historic native grape variety. Grown on warm alluvial soils around Bolzano, Lagrein expresses depth, structure and elegance — a true reflection of South Tyrolean wine culture.

As part of our commitment to sustainable viticulture in Italy, we also cultivate Souvignier Gris, a fungus-resistant grape variety that allows us to significantly reduce plant protection treatments and farm responsibly for future generations.

Open Cellar Tour & Guided Wine Tasting

Every Friday at 2 pm (German language), we offer a guided winery tour in Bolzano including a visit to our historic cellar and a curated tasting of four selected wines.

Wine Tasting with the Winemaker

Every Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, guests may enjoy a personal wine tasting with the winemaker.

This informal yet refined format allows deeper insight into terroir, vinification and style — perfect for those looking for a more personal winery experience in Italy.

For private groups, celebrations or corporate events, we offer customised winery tours and exclusive wine tastings from Monday to Saturday (subject to availability).
